Hastings Contemporary

Architects: HAT Projects

Opened 2012

Opened in March 2012 as Jerwood Gallery, this major capital project was originally conceived as the permanent home of Jerwood Collection of Modern & Contemporary British art, alongside a programme of contemporary exhibitions. The gallery’s £5 million construction costs were funded entirely by Jerwood Foundation and as its principal stakeholder funder, the Foundation has supported it with grants and payments exceeding £2.6 million since 2012. In 2017 the gallery became a UK registered charity and was awarded NPO Status by Arts Council England.

Designed by the architectural practice, HAT Projects, the gallery was awarded a Public and Community architectural award from Sussex Heritage Trust in 2012 and in 2013 a Civic Trust Award and a National RIBA Award.

Since 2012, the gallery has played an important role as a catalyst in the cultural and economic regeneration of Hastings and the surrounding area as well as being an architectural exemplar.

In July 2019, the gallery relaunched as Hastings Contemporary and will operate with full financial and operational independence. The award-winning building continues to be owned by Jerwood and the Jerwood Collection is available for loan to art galleries and institutions throughout the UK to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of 20th and 21st Century British art.
