John Jerwood and the Jerwood Foundation transformed the campus of the School – without their support, the Smallbone Library, the Lower School campus and the Jerwood School of Design could not have been built.
Henry Price, Headmaster of Oakham School
Opened by Alan Grieve on 25 April 2009, the Jerwood School of Design, was funded with a £950,000 capital grant from Jerwood Foundation. The two-storey building which includes two multimedia workshops and two high tech studios with specialist facilities for CAD/CAM and electronics, provides outstanding facilities for the school's upandcoming designers and technologists, many of whom have won national awards.
The brief to the architect, Project Orange, stipulated that the building be sensitive to its surroundings, environmentally sustainable and reflect the school’s commitment to the highest standards of design.
In April 2020, the Jerwood School of Design was temporarily redeployed by its Department of Design and Technology from an outstanding learning facility into a manufacturer of face shields to protect frontline NHS staff in the local community in their fight against Covid-19. Read more.
