Jerwood in August 2016

The Painter Behind the Canvas, Jerwood Gallery, Hastings until 9th October 2015

'Such an intelligently curated exhibition. The juxtaposition of self-portraits with works from the Jerwood's collection really increase our awareness of the artists'. Ruth Borchard’s son, Richard Borchard

Ruth Borchard (1910-2000) was a prolific writer who was compelled to combine her love of modern painting and fascination with creative introspection to collect hundreds of self-portraits by British artists.

A partnership between Jerwood Gallery, Piano Nobile Gallery and the Borchard Collection has resulted in this two room exhibition of Jerwood Collection works including Euan Uglow, William Gear and Keith Vaughan alongside their self-portraits from the Borchard Collection.

‘Always I was trying to feel my way through to the painter behind the canvas – was there original talent plus the stamina to sustain it?’ Ruth Borchard

‘When I was a little boy I had the most extraordinary friend…Pablo Picasso!’ Anthony Penrose grew up in Farley Farm House in East Sussex, home of his mother the photographer Lee Miller and father surrealist painter Roland Penrose. Together they built up a special collection and archive of contemporary art treasures including ceramics, etchings and photographs of and by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) who visited them there. His visits made a long lasting impression on the growing Anthony who recalled the memories in his book The Boy Who Bit Picasso.

A family-focused one room display showcases a selection of these works collected over 35 years.

Marcus Harvey: Inselaffe continues in the Foreshore Gallery and Rooms 1 and 2 until 16th October.
