Jerwood Foundation is pleased to confirm the renewal of the long-term loan of Crucifixion, 1994 by Craigie Aitchison CBE, RSA, RA (1926-2009) to Hereford Cathedral for a further two years.
On display since 2019, the work continues to be accessible to visitors, where its quiet intensity resonates with the surrounding architectural and spiritual setting.
Crucifixion was a recurring subject in Aitchison’s work. Though not religious, he was drawn to its emotional power, describing it as “the most horrific story I’ve ever heard… they were all ganging up against one person… it was so unfair.”
The painting was awarded the first Jerwood Painting Prize in 1994, and its continued display reflects Jerwood Foundation’s commitment to making works from the Collection widely accessible through long-term partnerships with public institutions.
