Jerwood in July 2016



Jerwood Collection’s iconic painting, The Bather, is currently on loan to Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, for a major exhibition of Christopher Wood’s work, Sophisticated Primitive (2 July- 2 October). This comprehensive survey explores the development of his faux-naïve style and inspiration he took from his influential circle of friends during his short life. The Bather, which was one of the first paintings to join the Jerwood Collection is believed to depict Christopher Wood’s lover the model Jeanne Bourgoint, whom he met through his friend Jean Cocteau.

Jerwood Choreographic Research Project Edition II
Applications are now open for the second edition of the Jerwood Choreographic Research Project (JCRPII), launched on 16 June at Jerwood Space by DanceXchange's Artistic Director David Massingham and Jerwood Charitable Foundation's Chairman Tim Eyles.

JCRP is an innovative investment model supporting new thinking in choreographic practice. It is designed to kick-start ideas and research into challenging and exciting choreographic concepts, and is a National Dance Network initiative supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation and delivered by DanceXchange. In celebration of ten years of support for visual arts practice Jerwood Visual Arts in launching the first of two new curatorial projects on 7 July. Jerwood Staging Series will include newly presented works by over 18 artists with a moving-image or performance based practice, presented through four events 7-14 July.

Inselaffe, the largest public gallery show to date by British artist Marcus Harvey opens at Jerwood Gallery on 16th July and will inhabit the ground floor. Taking its name from a derogatory, but light-hearted, German term for the British (Island Monkeys) the exhibition examines the UK’s national culture via a series of tough, but humorous, sculptures and paintings that Harvey suggests ‘ironise an overly romantic valuation of the past’.
Bitten by Picasso is a one room immersive display on view from 6 July, bringing together ceramics, etchings and photographs by and of Pablo Picasso, many relating to his links with Farley Farm House in East Sussex.
