Jerwood Foundation renews its support of Tracing Movement with a £3,000 grant

Jerwood Foundation is delighted to renew its support of Stuart Winter's company, Tracing Movement with a grant of £3,000.

Tracing Movement presented their first piece of live work to an audience of over 200 people on the 15th and 16th of May 2023 at Ugly Duck, London. All four performances received standing ovations and the feedback was nothing but excellent and full of joy. The ballet, called Dance With Whoever You Fucking Want To, explores social dances and the removal of gender binaries found in these structures; it focuses on the human condition and the want or need to connect with other bodies in a social setting. The musical framework is traditional folk dance, blitzed with a neoclassical soundscape made of electronic textures and fiddles, specially composed by Quentin Lachapèle. The costumes we designed by Ryan Dawson Laight and Rosie Whiting.

The company consisted of 5 professional dancers; Bryony Pennington, Mark Samaras, Barry Drummond, Naia Bautista and Felicity Chadwick; and 3 apprenticeship dancers: Jean Ceballos Ruge, Cecily Cutts and Bailey Johnson who are currently completing their training at Bird College London. The integration of apprenticeship places and professionals gave the training dancers an opportunity to share a rehearsal and performance space with established artists. This provides a development opportunity for emerging dance artists to observe skills, share knowledge and increase growth in a professional working environment. Collaboration and nurturing emerging talent is at the heart of Tracing Movement company structure.
