Hastings: Jerwood Drawing Festival at Jerwood Gallery (19 July- 15 October 2014)

Jerwood Gallery is delighted to announce that the programme for its summer Jerwood Drawing Festival (19 July -15 October 2014) will feature Drawn Together: Artist as Selector, a special exhibition of work by selectors of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and Quentin Blake at Jerwood Gallery, a collaboration with acclaimed illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.
2014 marks the twentieth year of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. The prize is a joint initiative led by founding Director Professor Anita Taylor of Drawing Projects UK with the support of Jerwood Charitable Foundation through its London based visual arts programme, and in association with Bath Spa University,
To launch the 20th anniversary celebrations, Jerwood Gallery will be having an exhibition of drawings, Drawn Together: Artist as Selector, profiling the unique focus of the Jerwood Drawing Prize. The exhibition will centre on the role of drawing in the practice of eminent artists including Michael Craig-Martin, Cornelia Parker and Rachel Whiteread, all of whom have been on the selection panel for the annual open exhibition over the past twenty years. Drawn Together: Artist as Selector is curated by Professor Anita Taylor, Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize and Dean of Bath School of Art and Design, Bath Spa University.
The celebration of the Jerwood Drawing Prize will coincide with an exciting project with multi award winning illustrator and part time Hastings resident, Sir Quentin Blake. Quentin Blake at Jerwood Gallery will be a display of Quentin’s own artistic responses to ten highlights from the Jerwood Collection. The works, which explore the story of the artists included in the collection, many of whom Quentin knew personally, will be on display in the collection galleries. The collaboration will also see the creation of a new gallery guide to support the display, Artists on the Beach: A Jerwood Gallery Notebook, illustrated by Quentin Blake, which will be on sale in the gallery shop.
Liz Gimore, Director of Jerwood Gallery, says:
Jerwood Gallery’s summer festival focuses on and celebrates the basic creative act of drawing,
whether as artist, illustrator or architect. It is a particular joy to be able to draw together the artist
selectors who have shaped the Jerwood Drawing Prize over its 20 year tenure; each artist helping to
define and redefine what we understand to be drawing over this timeframe. We are equally thrilled to
be working with Hastings resident, Sir Quentin Blake. This special exhibition offers an intimate,
personal and touching view of artists represented in the Jerwood Collection.
