Jerwood Collection Recent Acquisitions

Jerwood Collection continues to grow with four exciting new acquisitions to add to the collection of 20th and 21st century British art.

Dame Ethel Walker ARA, RBA, RP, DBE (1861-1951) Girl with Pigtails

Dame Ethel Walker ARA, RBA, RP, DBE (1861-1951) was a Scottish painter of portraits, flower-pieces, sea-pieces and decorative compositions. She is particularly renowned for her portraits, particularly of women, flower pieces, interiors, and seascapes in an idiosyncratic bright, vibrant Impressionistic style.

Charles Ginner ARA (1878-1952) The Sluice Gates at the Old Mill Standon Hertfordshire, 1939.

Charles Ginner is best remembered for his cityscapes and landscapes in which he uses small spots of meticulously applied colour to create one overpowering image. Often sketching and painting watercolours outdoors, The Sluice Gates at the Old Mill, Standon, Hertfordshire, demonstrates Ginner's study and deep understanding of the landscape surrounding him.

Lucian Freud O.M., C.H. (1922-2011), Esther, 1991.

Lucian Freud is considered one of the most important figurative painters of the past century. The son of architect Ernst Freud and grandson of Sigmund Freud, the artist became famous for his unsparing, psychological translations of the human body into loose brushwork and richly applied colour. His portraits—of lovers, friends, family, and celebrities such as David Hockney, Kate Moss, and Queen Elizabeth II—are fleshy, honest, tender, and complex.

Tracey Emin CBE, RA (b. 1963), Me, May 2019, 2020.

Tracey Emin’s expressive and visceral art is one of disclosure, dealing with personal experience and heightened states of emotion. Frank and intimate but universal in its relevance, her work draws on the fundamental themes of love, desire, loss and grief, unravelling in the process the nuanced constructs of ‘woman’ and ‘self’ through probing self-exploration.
