Georgie Dettmer Named 2027 Jerwood New Playwright at The Royal Court Theatre

Georgie Dettmer has been named, 2027 Jerwood New Playwright at the Royal Court Theatre. Her new play, WAR FACE, will run from 22 April to 1 May 2027.

Created with serving and retired soldiers in collaboration with the Chelsea Pensioners, WAR FACE reunites Dettmer with director Jess Edwards and will be co-produced with Orange Juice Productions.

Dettmer's appointment marks a significant moment in 2027, as Jerwood Foundation celebrates its 50th anniversary. It also highlights one of the Foundation's longest-supported projects. The Jerwood New Playwrights programme at the Royal Court Theatre has supported more than 100 playwrights over the past three decades.

In 2025, Jerwood Foundation awarded the Royal Court Theatre a grant of £200,000 over two years to support two writer development programmes at the heart of the theatre's mission. This funding builds on the legacy of the Jerwood New Playwrights programme, which provides an early-career playwright with a year of tailored artistic development and production support, culminating in an ambitious national showcase of their work. The grant also supported the launch of the Jerwood Royal Court Commissioning Scheme, a national initiative designed to identify and nurture emerging playwriting talent across the UK.

Since its inception, the Jerwood New Playwrights programme has helped develop and champion some of the UK's most influential playwrights, including Sarah Kane, Alice Birch and Mark Ravenhill. Georgie Dettmer now joins this distinguished lineage of writers supported through Jerwood Foundation's long-standing partnership with the Royal Court Theatre.
