Wilhelmina Barns-Graham work from Jerwood Collection on loan to major Tate St Ives retrospective

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, presented at Tate St Ives from 24 October 2026 – 3 May 2027, is a major retrospective celebrating the life and work of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004). On loan from Jerwood Collection is Winter Landscape, 1952, an oil and pencil on board work by the artist.

Bringing together over 170 paintings, drawings and prints alongside rarely seen archival material, the exhibition spans Barns-Graham’s eight-decade career. It traces the development of her practice from her student years at Edinburgh College of Art and her arrival in St Ives in 1940, through to the vibrant abstract works of her later career.

Barns-Graham became an important figure within the group of artists working in St Ives in the mid-twentieth century, developing a distinctive approach to landscape and abstraction through her explorations of form, colour and the natural world. The exhibition brings together works from across her career, including a significant presentation of her celebrated Glacier series.

Winter Landscape, 1952, from Jerwood Collection, dates from a formative period in Barns-Graham’s career and reflects her developing engagement with landscape, structure and abstraction.
