ThickSkin Theatre have confirmed their second Jerwood Associate Artist will be Ilona Sell. Following an open and highly competitive recruitment process, Ilona will shortly begin her funded placement during which she will work closely with ThickSkin’s Artistic Director Neil Bettles to support ThickSkin projects alongside developing her own work.
Ilona is an Offie-award winning theatre director, film Assistant Director and freelance producer with a background in movement. Her practice encompasses conceptual, boundary-pushing adaptations of classic texts as well as devised new work centering queer people and women.
Ilona has directed shows at multiple theatres nationally, and recently directed a production that won the “Shedinburgh Future of Theatre” award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2025. Ilona is delighted to be joining ThickSkin and is looking forward to working with and learning from the team.
