Works from Jerwood Collection on loan to Gladys Hynes: Radical Lives at Charleston in Lewes

Gladys Hynes: Radical Lives, presented at Charleston in Lewes from 2 May to 4 October 2026, is the first major exhibition dedicated to the painter, sculptor, illustrator and designer Gladys Hynes (1888–1958), reappraising her contribution to early twentieth-century British art.

Bringing together works from public and private collections, the exhibition explores four key facets of Hynes’s practice, from her connections to the Newlyn School and Omega Workshops to her experimental modernism, wartime imagery and innovative illustration and design. It also highlights her extraordinary circle of collaborators and contemporaries, including Vanessa Bell, Nina Hamnett, Laura Knight, Gluck and Jacob Epstein.

Three works are on loan from Jerwood Collection: Dod Procter RA (1892-1972), Lilian, 1923; Elizabeth Forbes (1859-1912), Midday Rest, circa 1904; and Christopher Wood (1901-1930), The Bather, circa 1925-26. These works contribute to the exhibition’s exploration of Hynes’s artistic networks and the wider context of British modernism.
