Jerwood Collection is pleased to announce that Lunar Synthesis, circa 1942 by John Tunnard (1900-1971) will be loaned to Comrades in Art: Artists International Association 1933–56 at Towner Eastbourne, opening 7 May 2026. This landmark exhibition explores the political and artistic legacy of the anti-fascist Artists International Association (AIA), bringing together works by founding members and their allies.
Tunnard was a pioneering figure within British modernism, and Lunar Synthesis exemplifies his distinctive, otherworldly style, combining abstraction, biomorphic forms, and architectural geometry to evoke cosmic landscapes. The work resonates with the AIA’s spirit of internationalism and creative collaboration, linking Tunnard’s personal vision to a broader narrative of social commitment and artistic resistance.
