New Acquisition: Stanley William Hayter, Combat (1953)

Jerwood Foundation is delighted to announce the acquisition of Combat (1953) by Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988) for Jerwood Collection. One of the most influential printmakers of the 20th century, Hayter was the founder of the legendary Atelier 17 in Paris, a studio that became a hub for innovation and collaboration in modern printmaking.

Created using engraving, soft-ground etching, and scorper on Marais paper, Combat exemplifies Hayter’s dynamic, experimental approach to line and form. Its interlocking shapes and rhythmic energy capture both the physicality and psychological intensity that defined much of his post-war work. This acquisition enriches the Collection’s holdings in modern art and highlights the international exchange that shaped British artists working in the mid-20th century.
