New Acquisition: John Armstrong, Fruit (1964)

Jerwood Foundation has recently acquired Fruit (1964) by John Armstrong (1893–1972) for Jerwood Collection, which is a delicately composed still life reflecting Armstrong’s poetic sensibility and mastery of form as well as demonstrating his distinctive balance between realism and quiet surrealism and ability to transform ordinary objects into contemplative arrangements.

With its subtle geometry and restrained palette, Fruit speaks to Armstrong’s lifelong exploration of symbolism and harmony within the everyday. The addition of this work strengthens the Collection’s representation of mid-century British painting and offers new insight into an artist whose practice bridged the decorative, theatrical, and also deeply personal.
