National Theatre: Jerwood Workshops

Jerwood Foundation has awarded a grant of £105,000 over three years to support artist development workshops through the National Theatre's New Work Studio. The National Theatre Studio is the creative engine of the National Theatre and a hub for writers, directors and storytellers from all backgrounds. This partnership will support four workshops each year, helping the National Theatre to share their unique spaces, resources and networks with theatre’s most exciting artists from across the UK.  Jerwood Workshops will give artists the resources they need to hone their craft, be innovative and develop new work for stages outside London. The National Theatre makes theatre that entertains and inspires using its creativity, expertise and unique reach. It tells big stories in bold ways, offering the widest access to high quality theatre to millions of audience members across the UK and around the world.

Lara Wardle, Executive Director and Trustee Jerwood Foundation said:

This new partnership with the National Theatre underlines Jerwood’s commitment to supporting excellence and emerging talent in the arts in the UK. I am delighted that Jerwood Workshops will provide valuable opportunities and resources to 60 talented theatre makers to develop 12 new projects over the next three years.

Indhu Rubasingham, Director and Co-CEO of the National Theatre, said:

We are delighted to have the support of Jerwood Foundation over the next three years. The Jerwood Workshops will help talented artists and theatre companies from outside of London to invest in pioneering work and reach new audiences. In such a difficult time for new work creation, we are grateful for the trustees’ generous support.

The first proposed Jerwood Workshop will be with artists Ava Pickett and Natasha Rickman, who are adapting and directing The Manningtree Witches. This play is set to open at Mercury Theatre Colchester in early 2026, and it will be Natasha Rickman's first show as Artistic Director. The workshop will take place at the National Theatre Studio in October 2025.
