20 Years of Jerwood Gallery at the Natural History Museum

This month we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Jerwood Gallery at the Natural History Museum.

Officially opened by Lord Palumbo on 28th September 1999, the inaugural exhibition in the new gallery was the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year

Jerwood Foundation made a major capital grant of £900,000 towards the £1.4 million cost of the refurbishment that transformed the former Shell Gallery, which had displayed the museum's collection of shells, (along with an impressive Giant Squid) before it was hit by an incendiary bomb in 1940, the only one to strike the museum during the Second World War. The room had been previously patched up at low cost and had become an auxiliary space, even being used as a badminton court at one time.

The work restored the features of Alfred Waterhouse's 1881 design, creating a dedicated exhibition space enabling an innovative art/science programme to flourish.

Jerwood Gallery is currently inhabited by Luke Jerram's awe-inspiring artwork Museum of the Moon. Installed to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, last month the hugely popular exhibition realised a staggering one million visits since its opening on 15 May. It is on display until Sunday 5th January 2020.

Green light for three Jerwood Arts programmes 2020-2022

Following news of funding through Arts Council England’s Transforming Leadership Fund, Jerwood Arts confirms a fourth edition of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries alongside two new pilot programmes, Jerwood Curatorial Accelerator and Jerwood New Creative Leaders.

All three programmes aim to transform the leadership potential of the next generation of artists, curators, producers and creatives from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Arts Council England's National Lottery funding joins further funding from Art Fund, Art Council Wales, Creative Scotland and Garfield Weston Foundation.

The three programmes will be supported by a training, research and evaluation team of People Make It Work, Dr Dave O’Brien and Annabel Jackson Associates Ltd, with additional expertise confirmed from Kickstarter and Arts Emergency. We are also delighted to be working with the British Council again, to explore the potential for international placements. Jerwood Arts will be working closely with all our partners and funders on the details of the programmes over the next few months and announce more information about each programme later this autumn.
