Jerwood Foundation Chairman Emeritus Alan Grieve CBE (1928-2025)

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Chairman Emeritus Alan Grieve CBE (1928-2025).

Alan founded Jerwood Foundation in 1977 for John Jerwood MC and, since that date, his unique vision and passion for the arts has shaped the Foundation’s mission.

During Alan’s 30 years as Chairman, he initiated and oversaw many significant projects including acquiring the first work for the Jerwood Collection (1993); the Jerwood Painting Prize (1994-2003); establishing Jerwood Space (1998); building Jerwood Gallery in Hastings (2012); and giving £1 million to support artists in need during the COVID-19 pandemic (2021).

During his tenure Alan was instrumental in the granting of over £113m in capital and project funding and secured the future of organisations including the Royal Court Theatre, London and DanceEast, Ipswich. More recently, he oversaw the merger of the two Jerwood charities, reuniting them into a single future-facing foundation.

Alan leaves a far-reaching legacy. We will greatly miss his guidance, sound judgement, and drive.
