Jerwood Gallery, Hastings

Architects: HAT Projects

Opened 2012

Jerwood Gallery in Hastings opened its doors to the public on 17 March 2012. Designed by the architectural practice HAT Projects, the Gallery houses the Jerwood Collection of Modern and Contemporary British art alongside a curated programme of contemporary exhibitions.

The gallery’s £5 million capital costs were funded by Jerwood Foundation and since 2012 the foundation has financially supported the gallery with grants in excess of £2.6 million. Jerwood Gallery became a UK registered charity in 2017 and was awarded NPO status by Arts Council England. Since 2012 it has played an important role as a catalyst in the cultural and economic regeneration of the area, as well as being an architectural exemplar. The Gallery was awarded the 2012 Public and Community architectural award from Sussex Heritage Trust, a Civic Trust for the built environment award 2013 and a RIBA National award 2013.

In February 2019 The Council of Jerwood Foundation made the difficult decision and publically announced that it has disengaged from Jerwood Gallery and would remove the Jerwood Collection by November. Click here for a statement.
