Jerwood Collection

‘A Jewel-box-worthy modern art collection’ – Coast Magazine

Since the Jerwood Foundation’s first purchase in 1993 of From my Window at Ditchling by Sir Frank Brangwyn, the Jerwood Collection has grown steadily in stature and importance to include nearly 250 works, which are housed in the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings.
Speaking about the rationale for the collection, Alan Grieve, Chairman of the Jerwood Foundation says, ‘I have been fortunate to have been able to make the collection over a relatively short period of time. It has been made to underline the strength of Jerwood in supporting the visual arts, enriching a cultural heritage and stimulating regeneration in Hastings’.
From 12 November 2014, selected new acquisitions will be on view in a special one room display celebrating 21 years of the Jerwood Collection. The exhibition will include works by John Minton, John Piper and John Tunnard alongside generous donations and additions to the collection from the estates of Alfred Cohen, Edgar Hubert and Alexander Mackenzie.
The main focus of the collection is on art created between the First World War and the 1960s. Highlights include works by some of the great British artists of the 20th century, including Sir Stanley Spencer, L S Lowry, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. The collection, which continues to grow, also includes paintings by contemporary artists including Rose Wylie, Maggi Hambling and Jeffery Camp. It represents a personal rather than an academic reading of Modern British art, resulting in a collection that is accessible, surprising, and of sustained quality. Images of the oil paintings in the Jerwood Collection can be viewed online on the Art UK website.
Hastings enjoys a long artistic tradition. Strong links with the town and its surrounding coastline have been forged by a number of artists in the Jerwood Collection, most notably John Banting, John Bratby, Edward Burra and Jeffery Camp.
